Independent Strategies for Efficient Study
The program is designed to empower the student in the learning process and includes eight hours of instruction, a Parent Overview presentation, a manual, a pc software program and the Keep-in-Touch Program, which is an on-going, open-ended program to support the use of the strategies over time. Learning and organizational strategies are included in the program. Choose only one session.
Session 1 - Upper Elementary School: New this year and a parent or a tutor needs to be trained with the student to provide more consistent support because of the age of the children. Fee: $450. Times to be scheduled on an individual basis.
Strategies for Success in College
This class will teach strategies for taking notes when reading and listening to lecture-style instruction, organizational strategies and time management strategies, which research has shown to be a predictor of success in college.
Reading Comprehension
This class will develop stronger reading comprehension skills through vocabulary development, sentence-building activities, use of context clues and notetaking strategies.
Writing Skills
In this class, students will develop stronger skills to enable them to express their ideas in writing. The sessions will clearly identify the basic goals of writing and include instruction in understanding basic grammar, Reverse Diagramming, Upgrade Proofing, Cloze Activities and Model Writing.
SAT Vocabulary Development
Success on the Verbal sections of the SAT requires a strong vocabulary and increasing word knowledge takes time. Students will be taught to use a software program that supports learning new words and makes frequent review easy. Words that show up most frequently on the SAT will be assigned for daily sessions to be done Monday through Friday at home. On-going monitoring will take place by e-mail.
General Vocabulary Development for Elementary and Middle School Students
A strong vocabulary base is essential to understand language (written or oral) and to communicate with others. The increased time spent on “screens” can result in reduced exposure to a wide range of words. The program will build a stronger base of word knowledge to support reading, writing and listening. On-going monitoring will take place by e-mail.
Wordstorming – Improve Your Child’s Literacy Skills over the Summer (at home or on vacation)
Often worksheets are not successful because the individual is not actively engaged. Wordstorming will enable parents to provide instruction to build skills in decoding, word attack, spelling, reading and writing through the use of lessons that are highly structured. Each part of the lesson is a step that is needed to develop literacy skills. The program is based on the principles of Orton-Gillingham, characteristics of individuals with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, and research identifying reading problems of children with attention disorders. Sessions are scheduled on an individual basis.
Reverse Diagramming
This class is a sentence-building program that develops an understanding of the deep structures of language in an easy, effective manner. The program is an adaptation of the traditional sentence diagramming used in many schools; however, sentence diagramming requires the recognition of language structures as opposed to their organization. In Reverse Diagramming, the student must organize the sentences according to visual models called sentence grids.
Seminars will be offered on particular topics throughout the school year. Seminars do not include the Keep-in-Touch program.
