Educational Services for Grades 4 & 5
Learning Strategy Instruction
for children in 4th & 5th grades is designed to help
upper elementary children develop more efficient learning
strategies. The program teaches strategies to guide processing
and support skill development in vocabulary, reading, spelling,
writing, math, listening and note-taking when reading textbooks
and stories.
The strategies are taught using direct instruction
for the child as well as parent and/or tutor so on-going
support for the use of the strategies can be provided by
the adult. The program includes 2 hours of instruction,
a manual and a PC computer software program (fee: $450).
Vocabulary Development Program
builds a stronger base of word knowledge, which is essential
to understand language (written or oral) and to communicate
with others. The increased time spent on “screens”
can result in reduced exposure to a wide range of words.
The program will increase vocabulary to support reading,
writing and listening. The program can be implemented by
a parent or by staff employed by Educational Enterprises,
Inc (EEI). If administered by EEI, training sessions will
be scheduled on an individual basis, assignments will be
given and on-going monitoring will take place by e-mail.
The program includes one hour of instruction,
the PC computer software and monitoring by email once a week for 8 weeks (fee: $250). The program
without on-going monitoring is also available (fee:$125).
Writing Skills Program develops
stronger skills to enable 4th & 5th graders to express
their ideas in writing. The sessions will clearly identify
the basic goals of writing and will include instruction
in understanding the functions of basic grammar, Reverse
Diagramming, Upgrade Proofing and Cloze writing activities.
The program includes the instruction (2 one hour sessions), the PC
computer software and 8 weeks of assignments, feedback and monitoring by e-mail (fee: $550). The instruction (2 one hour sessions) and PC software without on-going
monitoring are also available (fee: $300).
Reading Comprehension Program
will develop stronger reading comprehension skills through
vocabulary development, sentence-building activities, use
of context clues, and note-taking strategies. Sessions will
be individualized to the needs of the student, and the program runs for 8 weeks. Work will be assigned, and progress will be monitored by e-mail to accommodate busy schedules and review the assigned work. An initial training session of 2 hours is required (fee: $550).
PC Software instruction
is designed to teach children and/or parents/tutors to use
a software program that organizes the material into two-column
or flashcard formats using specific procedures that have
an evidence base that shows significant improvement in grades
with their use. The child and parents/tutors are taught
to use textbook format to identify important information
when reading textbooks, support focus of attention during
homework completion and include retrieval practice in cumulative
study systems. Sessions are scheduled on an individual basis
and can cover all subject areas or be limited to specific
subjects. Fees will be established on an individual basis
based on time involved.
Reverse Diagramming instruction is designed to improve reading fluency and written expression. The program is an adaptation of the traditional sentence diagramming used in many schools; however, the sentence diagramming required the recognition of language structures as opposed to their organization. In Reverse Diagramming, the student must organize the sentences according to visual models called sentence grids. An initial training session is required and on-going monitoring can be done through Educational Enterprises or by a parent, tutor, or teacher. The fee includes the instruction, manual, PC computer program and weekly monitoring by e-mail for 3 months (fee: $350). The program is also available without the monitoring (fee: $200).
Wordstorming is a user-friendly literacy program that supports the instruction of the teacher, tutor or parent who does not have sufficient expertise to design programs when working with children. Each lesson covers decoding, work attack/segmentation, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and reading fluency. An initial two hour training is required with one follow-up meeting to support implementation. The program includes the instruction and the workbooks.
Individual consultation
is available for parent consultation, self-monitoring of
attention programs, literacy skill development, strategy
instruction, time management and organization. For more information or to schedule, call (804) 747-1883 or email edenterinc@aol.com.
