The
program called Wordstorming is designed to guide the learning
process and support the instruction of the teacher, tutor,
or parent using the program. The process provides a structured,
multi-sensory approach that integrates the linkages (Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic)
in the learning but adapts to the individual's cognitive readiness.
Often worksheets and repetitive activities are not successful
because the individual is not cognitively engaged but simply
following directions or memorized routines in a passive manner.
Wordstorming will individualize to the thought process of
the student and activate his or her thinking in the instruction.
The goal is cognitive engagement and skill building based
on the learner's actual knowledge base, not the knowledge
base the student is assumed to have. Lessons based on shaky
concepts or previous lessons that were not clearly understood
do not facilitate progress but produce splintered skills that
will not come together in a fluent reading process. Individuals
with attention disorders and/or learning disabilities are
most vulnerable since their disorders interfere with information
processing.
The program is based on the principles of Orton-Gillingham,
on the characteristics of individuals with learning disabilities
such as dyslexia, and on the research identifying reading
problems of children with attention disorders. The program
builds phonemic awareness, teaches structural analysis, and
trains for generalization of the skills into the reading process.
Level
I is geared for children in grades 1 and 2 and should be used
prior to moving to the upper levels. All other students, regardless
of age start with Level II and move through the other levels
to develop automatic skills over time. Tha material are not
age-specific so the workbooks can be used with all age levels.
Level I includes consonants, vowels, and beginning/ending
sounds.
Level II includes sound combinations which are introduced
in a manner that utilizes the six syllable patterns and are
commonly grouped together.
Level III introduces additional sounds that are more sophisticated
but still utilize the six syllable patterns.
Level IV introduces beginning and ending sounds and continues
to develop syllabication rules and the six syllable patterns.
Level V introduces prefixes and suffixes and continues to develop
syllabication rules and the six syllable patterns.
The materials are not bound by text so they are appropriate
for all levels, including adult instruction.
